Case Study: GoTrump.com

It should go without saying that President Donald J Trump has a penchant to start various vanity projects during his time as a prominent real estate mogul, this is highlighted by the 500 or so business entities of which Donald Trump is the sole or principal owner. One such venture would be GoTrump.com, the Donald's unsuccessful attempt to launch himself into the lucrative internet market.

GoTrump.com was launched on the 24th of January 2006 as a travel website with the tagline, "The art of the travel deal", a reference to Trump's autobiography, The Art of the Deal. This site originally featured 60,000 hotels, including "Trump's picks", which were marketed as Donald Trump's favorite hotels and resorts, and was powered by Travelocity, a company which licenses its searching and booking technology to other websites. Additionally, they had reportedly partnered with notable organizations including Travelocity, American Airlines, American Express, Blue Star Jets and Joonbug.

Despite Trump stating that the website would be a "tremendous success", GoTrump.com ceased all operations in 2007. This was primarily due to the fact that this website wasn't generating sufficient to sustain itself and could be explained as the result of stiff competition and an out-of-touch marketing strategy. Additionally, it was reported by several of Donald Trump's associates that he didn't show sufficient confidence in the success of his pet project and had given up on it quite early in its life. Not much information regarding the financials of GoTrump.com is publicly available as it was a private venture which was completely owned by The Trump Organization (a conglomerate in which Donald J Trump is the principle owner).

Ironically, the domain GoTrump.com now redirects to the to the official website of The Lincoln Project, an American political action committee formed in late 2019 by a number of former Republicans with the primary objective of preventing the reelection of Donald J Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
